Tech Review -Amazon’s Echo Show; Is it worth the hype?

Review: Amazon's Echo Show 2nd Generation

    The Tech We Love

Hey everyone!  It’s holiday gift-buying season, and we have a great product for the person on your list that needs a virtual assistant.

I am always in the kitchen exploring new recipes and working on new ideas for my blog, Dancing With Fireflies.  I used to haul my laptop in the kitchen, start up the videos and try to stop and start them as I went through the recipes with my sticky hands. The result was a messy keyboard and a lot of frustration.

Then I started trying to use my phone to keep notes, look up recipes, start timers, and play music.  And again, a lot of frustration.

That’s when Michael, my husband, and Nerd Mama’s tech guy, told me about the Echo Show and suggested that we give it a try. The result was great, it does everything I thought I wanted and a lot more.  This has become my go-to daily gadget, a great gift for busy moms and culinary Dads, or basically everyone.

    Echo Show Review

We don’t have little kids in our kitchen often, our kids are all grown up now. But we do have one adorable little granddaughter, and I have discovered so many fun things the Echo Show can do for kids of all ages.

But what I love about this device is that it makes it easy for us to connect to our granddaughter who lives out of state through the video function.  So any time she wants to come wave to her Bubbie and Zayde, she simply needs to tell her parents, and we can see her.  And when she’s older, Echo Show has a ton of kid-friendly games and skills for her to enjoy.

    Amazon's Echo Show (2nd Gen)

    What we liked:

Premium speakers with Dolby processing let you stream music and books in crisp, stereo sound.

1″ HD screen for watching videos, movies, and TV shows

Set up compatible Zigbee devices without the need for a separate hub. See your front door camera stream with 2-way audio and notifications.

Here are a few things that I appreciate:

The setup is straightforward, and you can easily customize your display.

The large 10-inch color display is a great size. I am using mine in my kitchen, and I like that I can see the screen from across the room.

The controls are easy to find, but they are placed at the top, so they don’t take up any of the screen. This is very sleek, and I like the way that it looks.  The mute button is at the top- so you can silence Alexa, and it will stop listening to you. This also turns off the camera and microphone. Along with the volume control.

You can connect to BlueTooth speakers for better sound. Or you can use the Aux input for your speakers. However, I find that the sound quality on the device is good, and it doesn’t require anything else for my listening needs. I can turn up the music and have a dance party without needing anything else. I like that you don’t need to touch it to adjust the volume, stop or forward the music.  And I enjoy the ability to ask Alexa to tell me the name of the song, artist, and album information.

On the screen, you can see the lyrics to many of your favorite songs, and it works great with Alexa music, and you can link Spotify premium to your account and play through your devices.

Alexa now has over 50,000 skills you can apply to your system. From playing a game, reading bedtime stories, or sending text messages, this device is very customizable. You can even build your own personal skills with Alexa Skill Blueprints.

Is Echo Show compatible with the Ring Doorbell?

Yes! I have the Ring doorbell, floodlight cams, and one on my garage.  I love that I can ask Alexa to show me the video feed from any of those devices, and it will show me the live feed.  From my Show, I can also respond to the doorbell, answer and speak with the person through the microphone, and hear their response.  You can also record from the show.

Echo Show works as a Smart Home hub.

You don’t need to purchase another piece of equipment to manage your smart home devices. You can do it all from your Echo Show.  This device handles smart home commands very easily.  I like that the display also shows you on-screen what app you are using, and you can use the touch screen to adjust the smart home appliances and lights from the Show’s screen.

Echo Show has both a touch screen and Bluetooth capabilities.  The beautiful 10-inch display makes it easy to play videos, watch TV, show maps, and even display a photo slideshow of your own uploaded photos.  The Bluetooth function makes it easy to add additional speakers and work with your phone.

Can you make calls from your Echo Show?

Yes! You can make and receive Skype and other internet calls from your Echo Show. You can even call 911 right from the device.

Echo Show can also work as an intercom device, allowing you to talk from one device to any other Alexa device. Using the “Drop-In” feature, you can also look in on the room that your Echo Show is in when this feature is activated.  This makes a great Nanny-cam, but I personally find this feature a little creepy, since there is no alert or manual accept screen on the device when this is activated.

Can you watch YouTube on Echo Show?

One of the best new features on the Echo Show is the ability to watch YouTube videos.  I love looking up my favorite cooking videos and following along in my kitchen.

Showing your photos on your Echo Show is easy.

I love displaying my photos on my Echo Show. Uploading them to the Show simply requires you to use the Amazon Photos app; there you can choose to always back up your photos or choose which ones you would like to upload.  Then you can decide to make albums, and those specific albums can be displayed on your Echo Show or FireTV.  Setting that up is very easy and took just a few minutes of my time.

You can even take photos on your Echo Show through the device’s 5 mp camera. This is so much fun at parties when you can take group photos or set up for a photo booth!

What else can Echo Show do?

Want to work out? You can follow videos, set timers, take notes about your workout, and even have Alexa remind you when it’s time to work out!

I love the recipe integration with Recipes.com and the ability to see recipe videos, add ingredients, look up a few variations of a recipe, and save the recipe to my device. It’s my favorite kitchen helper because it never asks to lick the beaters!

I use the Echo Show for recipes the most.

I think by far, the Echo Show is the best in my kitchen for showing me not just the recipes, but the ability to add ingredients directly to my phone's shopping list.  I love the videos of the recipes, and you can stop them exactly where you are and start them again when you move to the next stop.

You can also save recipes for later and choose from recipes that have been rated by other users.  You can also see the author and how long they take to make.

    How to use BERT

What I wish Echo Show did better:

Echo Show can look up directions for you, display the map, and even give you business hours. But unfortunately, as of yet, it can’t send those directions to your phone. That’s a feature I would love to see happen soon.

You can not play Netflix on your Amazon Show at this time. Echo Show can play movies and tv shows from the Prime video shows and programming from the Prime Video channel subscriptions.

The calendar function is there, but it is wonky and doesn’t work as well as I’d like. It doesn’t integrate well with my phone’s calendar.
